LGBT Noise

Hi Everyone,

I am emailing you all to let you know about the LGBT Noise March for Marriage taking place this Sunday (22ndAugust) in Dublin. It is the second annual march set up by LGBT Noise, a non-party political group advocating for full civil marriage rights for same-sex couples. Last year they got 5,000 people out on the streets and this year they want to make it even bigger.

One month ago today President McAleese signed the Civil Partnership Bill into law. The Bill while being a huge step forward for both LGBT people and Irish society in general falls far short of providing full equality for same sex couples. Civil Partners will very much be unequal to married partners. The CPB doesn’t deal with tax or social welfare issues at all neither does it deal with children of same-sex couples, they are essentially denied an existence by not being even referred to. There are many other shortcomings in the bill.

Naturally USI is fully in support of the march and we will be marching. I urge anyone who is in support of equality to take to the streets this Sunday to show your support. It is particularly important that there is a huge number of people to show that the Civil Partnership Bill didn’t go far enough.

The marchers should gather at Dublin Castle at 2pm. The march will eventually get to the Department of Justice at Stephen Green where there will be speakers etc.

Unions are encouraged to only bring any lgbt specific banners but LGBT societies are encouraged to bring banners etc.

Here’s a link to the route map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105060862939118661213.00046e96753986b68df3d&source=embed&ll=53.34033,-6.261095&spn=0.016988,0.045447&z=15

If anyone has any questions at all or would like to join USI at the march please contact me: 086 7816393 or Isobel, the equality officer at: 086 1738455 or by return email. It would be great to have as many union reps as possible there!

Warm regards,

Siobhán
