Join the DITSU Events Team

The DITSU Events & Marketing Department is always looking for outgoing, fun individuals who are interested in getting involved in the events side of things during the year.

All sorts of jobs come up along the way:

  • Fund-raising for charity

  • Planning the most vile of food for iron stomach competitions

  • Helping bands set up equipment

  • Handing out flyers for events and campaigns

  • Running around like a headless chicken during events

  • Getting on the mic and keeping things going on site during lunchtimes

  • Putting up and taking down posters for events

  • Picking unsuspecting students to partake in blind date competitions

. . . basically, whatever fun stuff needs doing!

The Events Team get involved in everything going and the rewards are seemingly endless. . . seriously. . .:

  • You get to wear our fantastic Events Team T shirts they're all the rage, ya know!

  • You get to come along to our Reward Parties which are already legendary and will become even more so, as we step them up this year! There's at least one per Semester and they're already scheduled so put them in the diary! There'll be a couple of free drinks in it and we'll feed ye too!

  • You get to list membership of the Events Team on your CV. With everyone expected to have at least a degree these days when looking for a job, it's the things you do outside of earning your degree that help you stand out from the crowd. Participation in events in college always looks good!

  • You get the warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy when we do the charity events and you see how us all having fun can benefit this years chosen charity - Our Lady%u2019s Children%u2019s Hospital, Crumlin.

  • You're first on the list of people we contact when any other easy, paid work comes our way.

  • Other perks can include free tickets to events from time to time if you're very good!

  • You also get direct access to us to b*tch and moan and tell us how much we suck and tell us what kinds of events we SHOULD be doing. Now THAT'S priceless, right there.

So if you're interested, just drop an email into events@ditsu .ie with 'Events Team' in the subject line telling us why you want to get involved.
look forward to hearing from you Sean

He's left a little message below for you, so take a look before you go.If you would like to give him a hand and get involved in ents & events, drop in to your local SU office or call (01) 402 2944.

Our trusty E&M department have kindly pre answered some of the most asked questions. If you want to ask or suggest anything please contact Sean or Mark and they'll be glad to help.

What do you do?
WE DO LOADS! We're the people who put together all the DIT Students' Union events. We organise Freshers Week, RAG Week, the BIG Bash, and the Graduation Balls etc. We're also the very same people who try to get external companies to give us loads of money so we can spend it on keeping DIT students happy. Tougher than you might think, ya know!

Where are you based?
The Events and Marketing Department is based in DIT Bolton St. Students%u2019 Union. We used to be in Aungier St. but we decided we should share the love so we're over Northside now.

Have you ANY idea what you're doing?
We've a fairly good idea, we think but we definitely don't get it right all the time, that's for sure, but we do our best! We're always looking for suggestions from you lot, so feel free. Constructive ones would be nice, as opposed to telling us to go and sh*te. Seriously, as far as we're concerned this is like a disclaimer - we're TELLING you we're open to suggestions, so rather than bitch amongst yourselves come bitch at us! It's your capitation that pays us so come along and put us back in our box. Tell us what we SHOULD be doing.

Do you have loads of free stuff?
No. We don't have loads of free stuff. We do put time and effort into GETTING free stuff for ye but it doesn't mean we have a secret warehouse full of free stuff that can be accessed on a whim. You'd be surprised, actually, how the whole free thing operates. There are generally specific times of year where free stuff is most likely to be available, those being September (hence Freshers Packs), January and May(ish) (hence, Exam Packs). We do of course, through our huge network of contacts, from time to time, come across other free stuff but to be honest it's largely in the laps of the gods.

Can I organise my own events and advertise through the Students Union?
You can, of course, organise your own events. As for advertising them through the Students' Union, not so much. At any point in time we probably have our own stuff that we're advertising and promoting and can not, usually, help you promote something you're running yourself. Now, this does NOT mean that you can't approach us with ideas and see is it something we might get involved in and support. There are many ways we might support an event, so do come talk to us and, quite simply, we'll do what we can.

Can I put up posters on DIT sites?
Nope. We're tasked with controlling what goes up on notice boards etc. so you can't put stuff up without clearing it through us first. This applies to external organisations / clubs / pubs etc as well as to students who may be involved in something they're looking to promote. Again, come talk to us. We're fairly sound and we've been known to allow stuff go up. There are guidelines etc. though which we all have to stick to considering the DIT sites are private property. Yup, they are.

Can my band play at a DITSU event?
Maybe, is the basic answer to that one. We do have opportunities from time to time for bands to play at our events. Generally these are support slots at, say, the Freshers Ball or RAG Ball or something like that. The best thing to do is pop into us with a demo cd or send us a link to your Myspace or come in and plonk yourself in our office and sing a bit for us basically, we'll need to hear your band and see what kind of stuff ye do and whether it'd fit with any of the gigs we're running.

Can my band play during lunchtime on one of the DIT sties?
Maybe, see answer to previous question, plus factor in that there are sound equipment considerations and scheduling considerations also so it's not, sometimes, as simple as just showing up and rocking out.

Why are DITSU events so expensive?
Eh, they're not! That's the answer to that one, pretty much. We work long and hard to keep ticket prices for our gigs as reasonable as possible. Generally, if you look at the line-up for our gigs and check how much the bands / djs cost to see elsewhere in Dublin recently you'll see that we're significantly cheaper. That's the aim. Any time this is NOT the case, feel free to come ask us and we'll gladly explain why. That pretty much never happens, by the way. One of the main factors that influence our ticket prices is the fact that we don't have a campus bar or campus club. This, obviously, means that we are usually hiring out Dublin venues, which, of course, costs a pretty penny. Generally though we STILL manage to run the events and charge you less than you'd otherwise pay.

Can I get a 'press pass' to allow me take photos at DITSU events?
Come talk to us well in advance of the event and we'll see. We do have a Communications Department who generally take photos at our events. We also have a professional photographer we employ for some of our bigger events and are not in the habit of giving out LOADS of passes for each gig. But do come talk to us. Options are always good.

Can I submit photos that DITSU might then publish in the magazine or put on the website?

Of course you can, by all means! Email them into events@ditsu.ie. If we do use them you will be very much credited with having taken them for the world to see!

Can you help me organise a class party?

We can. We've a lot of contacts in various pubs and clubs around the city and will gladly help in any way we can.

Can I have a free T shirt?

Of course you can - all you have to do is earn it! Come help out. Volunteer during RAG week. Volunteer to help us out the night of the event. Raise a load of money for charity. Offer something colouredy and pretty in exchange. These are some of the ways for you to get a free t shirt. There are others%u2026and many yet to be discovered, we'd imagine!

Can I have a free ticket to a gig?

I refer you directly to the answer to the previous question and advise you to multiply your efforts by a factor of at least 5.7. It takes an awful lot to warrant a free ticket! So come wow us with your magnificence and we may then be provider of free entry to stuff.

How do I get VIP access to a DITSU gig?

Generally those who get VIP access, when such a thing actually exists, are generally the people who are most helpful and earn the pleasure. They may also be people who gave us money to put the event together by helping us promote it or being our lackey on the night of the event, or promising us untold riches!

Can I bring my boyfriend / girlfriend / friend to a DITSU gig, even though they%u2019re not in DIT?

You sure can. As long as they have a ticket and / or are willing to pay on the door if there's space in the venue, it's all good. They are, of course, subject to the same admission criteria as anyone else, but they will not be refused entry solely on the basis that they are not DIT students.

Why wouldn't the bouncer let me in to the DITSU gig last night?

Ok. We don't know! When we hire a venue in the city to run an event, the venue always retains the right of admission (that's what R.O.A.R. means on tickets and posters etc.). It is private property, it is THEIR venue and it is up to them to decide who is allowed in. We cannot overrule the door staff and we will not get involved in any disagreement between students and door staff. If we witness something that we feel is unfair or unjust on one of our students we will take action but PLEASE don't come to us looking for us to get you in when you're drunk or have been thrown out for something you shouldn't have been doing. Remember - as a customer you get NO extra leeway simply because it's a DITSU run event.

Where can I buy tickets?

Generally you get them in the Students Union. If there are tickets left for a particular event they may be made available on the door on the night but this is not guaranteed. The bigger events will sell out and there will be no tickets available on the door on those nights.

Can I get a refund?

No. Not unless there are very special extenuating circumstances. We won't refund a ticket because you just decided you didn't want to go or because you bought a load of tickets for your friends and now a couple of them can't go or anything like that.

Will there be cheap drinks?

There may be drinks promotions in the venue. These will be advertised inside the venue on the night. We do not actively promote cheap drink, as we do not feel it should be the main reasoning behind any of our events.

Will you be there?

Yes we'll be there. A representative from Events and Marketing will be present at all DITSU organised events, barring any unforeseen eventualities. This is to ensure smooth running of the event and liaise with the venue and the acts as well as to be available to you, should you need to speak to us.

Do I need to bring my student card to DITSU events?

You should carry your DIT Student Card with you to DITSU events. This is so that you can identify yourself as a DIT student in a variety of possible situations, which may arise.
