Convenor Blog

05 December 2011

Oi Oi!

Apologies for not updating this in a while, saying that things have been manic is an understatement!

RAG week is upon us so I hope you're all feeling generous. Even if you haven't got the time to raise a few quid, dropping some change into a box when approached by a volunteer or buying a Ross Nugent wristband are a couple of ways that you can contribute. There's a full list of events on the website so check that out. Locally, there'll be something happening every day at lunchtime down in the basement so make sure you pop down for the craic! I'm really excited about the Northside v Southside football match and hopefully the next time I blog I can tell you all about how we wiped the floor with that lot!

We're coming to the end of what's been a hugely successful National Campaign. Aungier St. students turned out in their droves to march, stressing to the government and reminding the public that we cannot afford another increase in student contributions nor will any more cuts to the grant be tolerated. The protest went off without a hitch and this is down to the large number of volunteers who helped out with stewarding on the day. You guys can really hold your heads high and say that you did the student movement proud. The fight against fees doesn't end here though, you ought to be keeping the pressure on your local TDs right up until budget day and beyond that.

You may have noticed a few small changes down in the basement. The jukebox is cheaper now. You can get 4 songs for a euro. If you walk down to the basement and you happen to hear The Streets, The Ordinary Boys or Dire Straits, I've probably been at it! Secondly, the bats and balls for the table tennis table are now available through the shop. All you have to do is produce your student card. Please give these back though. If they are all nicked then we may not be able to provide this service for long. One thing that hasn't changed though is the litter culture in the basement. Aungier St. is going to be pushed forward by DIT as part of the Green Campus initiative in the second semester and we cannot afford to keep this habit of not cleaning up after ourselves. Please, use the bins that are provided.

I'll do my best to get another update in before Chistmas but if there's anything you need to know in the meantime then you know what to do. My email address is partially covering that awful photo of me up at the top of the page. You can also drop into the office any time. Remember, you pay our wages and we're there to help in a number of ways. There's also a number of ways in which you can get involved.

Don't be a stranger!

Glenn

01 Nov 2011

Hey all!

This blog has been two weeks in the making! Review week is upon us and I hope you've all had a great start to the academic year.

Things have been busy as ever within the union. Ciarán has sent out an email to every student email account regarding the upcoming national campaign. Please have a read of this as it's of the utmost urgency and importance! We need each and every one of you to stand up and be counted when we try and combat efforts to put more pain on education.

Although the above is something to be fearful of, there is plenty to be excited about in the run up to Christmas. RAG Week commences on Monday 21st November so get your thinking caps on and come up with some innovative ways of fundraising for the Ross Nugent foundation! Last year we saw some crazy methods including a dude who shaved off his dreadlocks that he had for seven years. He raised over €2,000 but even if you can only raise a small portion of that, your contributions will be greatly appreciated. We're also going to be holding the inaugural Northside v Southside soccer match for the charity. Details are still being finalized but if you're interested in lining out for the Southside team then drop down to the office and give me your details. If you just want to come and watch the game, that's cool too. I would suggest practicing some chants to get under the skin of the Northside campuses. Things like "in your Bolton St. slums" will add to the level of banter!

As we close in on Christmas, exams and assessments will be yisser priorities. If you have any questions regarding assessment regulations or if you're stressing at all then please, call down to us here in the office. Don't let things fester.

I can't stress enough how important it is to stay in touch with us. You may have seen the pop-up office facing Java City there last week. Essentially what we're doing here is taking the office out of the office. We want your feedback on everything from events to facilities. There are committees and feedback groups for everything so don't underestimate how strong your voice can be. Get in touch, stay in touch and you'll be touched by how much your touching can touch people.

Stay in touch!

Glenn

Story lads and lassies!

I hope everyone is settling down well into this semester. There's a few things to update you lot about but I'll try be brief!

Firstly, Class Rep Training was a major success. There was major enthusiasm and engagement with class reps from all six campuses but you'll be dee-lighted to know that Aungier Street had more reps there than any other campus. I'm very confident that we have elected a headstrong, reliable group of reps this year.

The first Governing Council of the year was an eventful one. We passed policy on a number of things. If you want to read up on that then you can check out the 'Get Involved' section on the website or ask your class rep. Each Class Rep will be receiving a summary of each Governing Council with content from the councillors themselves. Remember, any student can sit in on a council meeting to see what goes on.

Aungier Street livened up again last week. The lovely people at GigSoc played a short acoustic set on the Monday and they have promised to make that a regular occurrence in the common area. Preparation for RAG Week has begun too. I've already told you about Mini-Me joining us for the Halloween Ball but we can also confirm that tickets will only set you back €8 and the venue has been confirmed as the Button Factory in Temple Bar. Be sure to get your tickets from us in the SU Office as this is always one of the most popular nights of the year. Add Verne Troyer to the fray and you have a demand! We will be presenting him with honorary lifetime membership of the union so you can all claim to have something in common with the Hollywood superstar.

Lastly, I was a happy bunny to see Ireland's football team qualify for the Euro 2012 playoffs so in typical Irish fashion, I would like to invite ye all to watch the crucial playoff 2nd leg against Estonia in Karma. We'll have drink deals, finger food and green facepaint for the occasion and we might even extend an invite to the lovely folk across the road in Kevin Street! That's on the 15th of November so keep that in mind.

As always, email me with any questions or stop by and have a chat.

Stay classy,

Glenn

05 October 2011

Hey guys!

It's been a hectic few weeks here on Aungier St. I hope you're all recovered from what was an immense Fresher's Ball and ready to give it socks at future events. The next real significant night out will be the Halloween Ball. We're still finalizing the details for it but we can confirm one piece of awesome news. We will be joined on the night by the one and only Verne Troyer! For those of you who are fans of the Austin Power series then he'll need no introduction. He is of course, Mini-Me! Stay tuned to DITSU.ie and the Facebook page for more information but it's going to be a savage night. Don't forget that we have our weekly student night on down in The Mezz in Temple Bar. We're looking to put on all sorts of madness throughout the year so we're looking for recommendations about the kinds of acts you want to see on in there. Drop myself or Eric an email if there's an act, DJ or themed night you'd like to see here!

The Iron Stomach competition created a good buzz around the campus last Wednesday and we gave away a couple of free tickets into the Fresher's Ball. The Basement is YOUR area to relax and have the bant in so if there's any sort of event you'd like put on during the year, again, drop down to the office for a chat or email me. It's important that you guys have something to entertain yourselves with in between and after lectures.

We had our first Class Rep Meeting of the year this week as well and there was a tremendous turn out. It was by and large an introductory meeting where Eric appealed for feedback on Fresher's Week and where David recruited people for the Welfare Crew. The meeting was dominated by a long election process. We had 20 nominations for 14 positions on Governing Council and each of the candidates were all very passionate about representing you guys. Remember, each Councillor represents about 500 DIT students so it's important that you get your Class Rep to keep on their toes to make sure you're being represented properly.

To all reps that were at the meeting, thanks again for your patience. That's the only meeting of the year where elections will be prioritized. The rest of the meetings will be all about the issues that you guys need to get sorted for your class. The CRM is the best forum where your issues can be brought to our attention so it's crucial that every class ensures that their rep is present.

Nominations have re-opened for the three sub committees (Academic & Student Affairs, Operations and Commuunications, Services & Trading) as well as the Part Time Officer positions of Non-Traditional Students and Annex. These are key roles that need to be filled so if you think you're interested then please drop down to the SU Office and have a chat with me.

That's all for this time folks. Remember, myself and Shaz are always there to assist you with any issues that arise. Don't let things fester. Email me at convenor.ast@ditsu.ie if you have any queries at all.

All the best,
Glenn

26 September 2011

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give a quick update and recap of how Freshers Week went. It was manic down in the office with tickets flying out the door nearly every day. We were couriering more tickets in from the Northside and even had to send some of ye across to Mountjoy Square to get paint party tickets. There was a real buzz about the place and hats off to Eric for organizing four cracking events. I made it to the paint party myself on Tuesday and it was off the wall. There's something surreal yet brilliant about being let into a club in trackie bottoms. I wonder if it'll catch on?

Monday afternoon saw the first Aungier St. Blind Date of the year where we gave away some free tickets to the contestants. Keep an eye on the stage area throughout the year as that's where the bulk of our onsite events will be. I'm looking into a vast array of events to put on for you guys but if you have any ideas then drop into the office or email me.

Class Rep Recruitment is fully underway now. I've been blitzing classes which can be tricky, especially with the farcical timetable system. Don't panic if I haven't elected your class rep yet, I have a list of all the classes and any that I've missed so far will be gotten to over the next week or two. If you're super eager and want to give me a hand then hold the election yourselves by grabbing a nomination form from the office. For those of you already elected, the first CRM of the year will be on Tuesday October 4th at 1pm. The room number will be confirmed closer to the time and you'll all receive your free lunch as promised.

Speaking of nomination forms, we have plenty in the office as it's the time of year when we elect our Governing Councillors, Part Time Officers and Standing Committee members. We're hopeful of filling most of these positions at the first class rep meeting of the year and again I would like to extend the invite to freshers in particular to get involved in these roles. Again, any questions then just ask me!

With that, I'll sign off on this update! I hope to meet as many of you as I can on campus, during recruitment and at the Fresher's Ball on Thursday. If you haven't gotten your tickets yet then hurry the hell up. These will sell out, I guarantee it. Don't miss this night! Get them from the SU office for €15.

See ya round

Glenn

19 September 2011

Well lads and lassies! I’m Glenn Fitzpatrick, your Class Rep Convenor. It’s my job to work with the class reps based in Aungier Street and Temple Bar that you guys elect to make sure that your time here in DIT is the best it can be, both inside the classroom and outside it. First of all, I’d like to give a warm welcome to all of the incoming first years. Congratulations on making it this far, you’re in for a great few years. Starting a 3rd level course can be exciting but we know that it can be equally daunting. We want you guys get the best possible start to college life and we’ll certainly do our part to make sure that this is the case. The single best piece of advice that I can give you is to remember that while your grades are important, they’re not the only piece of the pie that is college life. We’re fortunate to have many great societies and clubs that are run excellently. There’s definitely something for everybody and you’re bound to meet plenty of new people. Just remember, the key to everything in life is balance so be sure to get your fair share of craic in or you’ll be cracking up before you know it! Eric has been working hard to ensure that Fresher’s Week is bigger and better than ever but that’s just the tip of the iceberg, watch this space is all I can say! What DIT lacks in parking spaces it sure makes up for in banter and DITSU is determined to make each and every DIT student is the envy of those going to Belfield IT and that other oversized place down at the bottom of Dame St.

Also, I’d like to welcome back current students. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s put their faith in me to represent you guys this year. I won’t let you down. What we can promise you is that you guys won’t be forgotten about either. It’s important that you guys re-fresh so keep an eye on the website and the Facebook page to see what we’re lining up! Make sure you stay tuned to this blog for regular updates too. Over the next few months I’ll need your help to make this campus better for everyone. I’ll be the first to admit that there are inherent problems with Aungier St. from the litter culture that’s developed in the common area to the constant issues with the Wi-Fi. I’ll do my very best to try and improve these things but I’ll really be depending on all of your opinions and feedback to back me up. You guys use these facilities so make sure that you use the chance to give your input. If you choose not to have your say then the hierarchy here in DIT will assume that everything is fine. We all know that this isn’t the case so let’s do something about it.
This year, I’m hoping we can make an effort to keep students on campus while they’re not in class. I’d love to see an array of different things happening in the common area and again, I’d be most appreciative of any ideas you have. Also, David and the rest of the Academic and Student Affairs team will be running various campaigns throughout the year so make sure you check them out and stock up on free pens, condoms, energy drinks and whatever else is coming your way.

I hope you’re all refreshed and ready to kick ass this year. Whether you’re coming back or just starting, this is a great year to be a DIT student. Over the next few weeks we’ll be going from class to class, recruiting new Class Reps. If we haven’t got to you yet then pop down to the office or stop me if you see me around the building. It’s absolutely vital that every class has somebody to keep them in the loop about what’s happening on campus and in the wider student movement. Some classes are entitled to two or more Class Reps. The general rule is one Rep per 30 students. Again, pop down to the office if you’re interested in getting involved in DITSU this year in any way or form. If any of the positions listed on the website or on the posters you’ve seen interest you then grab a nomination form pronto. We’ll be holding elections at the first Class Rep Meeting of the year. I’d especially like to extend the invite to get involved to incoming first years and mature students. It’s important to us that we can represent the entire student body.

If you have any queries at all then you can email me at convenorast@ditsu.ie or alternatively, drop down to the office. Shaz is your Student Support Advisor (SSA for short) and she’s tremendous.

Here’s to a great year both academically and recreationally.

Glenn
